Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CADV) responded to the critical need to provide safe spaces for victims of domestic violence during the Covid-19 stay-at-home period. CADV mobilised financial resources in the sum of $75,000, which were disbursed to the five functioning non-governmental shelters in Trinidad, namely Goshen House, Half Way House 2016, Myrtle’s Place, The Shelter for Battered Women and Children, and Vision of Hope, to aid in maintaining their operations in the midst of intensified domestic violence.
This financial contribution to shelters became a reality thanks to the generosity of a group of women friends led by Mrs. Sandra Chin Yuen Kee, who decided to stand up against the escalating incidence of domestic violence by organizing a Caribbean Pot Luck fundraiser. Although the event had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, supporters of the event still donated ticket sale proceeds to CADV.
Mrs. Sherron Harford, Management Committee Member of The Shelter, recognized “the constant support of CADV as one of the drivers that fuel The Shelter to keep going”. Mrs. Harford indicated that the donation would be used to meet payroll expenses of employees and counsellors.
The presence of Covid-19 in Trinidad and Tobago continues to present a challenging mix of reduced opportunities for event fundraising, contracted budgets and heightened costs. Due to this additional strain, many shelters face on-going challenges in maintaining operations and the risk of shutting their doors to persons desperately in need of safety and support. CADV calls on all members of society to support the CADV in executing its mission to eradicate domestic violence in our nation by giving of their time, talent or treasure.
